What is a Scottie Rescue? A
Scottie Rescue is one who has been previously owned and whose owner can no
longer keep them. They are turned in for a variety of reasons and come to us
from many sources. Whatever the circumstances, they are in need of a good home,
care, and love, and might just be the perfect Scottie companion for
you.
When a rescue comes into the STCGNY rescue program, several steps
must be performed before the dog is made available to go to their new home. The
dogs are washed and groomed so they will look their best! Their diet is
evaluated and improved. They see our veterinarians and are examined to evaluate
their health, they are brought up to date on vaccines, tests are performed to
make sure they are free of parasites, heartworm and Lyme diseases, and they are
spayed or neutered if age and health permit before placement. Further testing
and treatment is provided if necessary or indicated. Their temperament and
needs are evaluated in order to make the best choice we can for both the dog
and the adopter.
Our rescue program functions on donations and
volunteers. Adoption donations are requested to help defray costs so that we
can continue to help the dogs in need. The fee is currently $250.00 per adoption,
which only represents a portion of what we actually spend. We don't require a
donation for dog turnins, but they are always appreciated. We require a home
visit, vet and personal reference checks before adopting out a Scottie rescue,
as do most rescue organizations, to ensure our rescues are happy and
comfortable for the remainder of their lives. Volunteers are always welcome to
offer whatever help they feel they can contribute!
We work hard to make
the perfect and forever match for what each individual Scottie needs with one
of our prescreened applicants. We hope you will trust us with a Scottie you may
need to rehome, instead of bringing them to a shelter or giving them away to
someone who may not have experience with the Scottie temperament. We hope you
will consider coming to us if you can provide a loving home to a Scottie who
needs a second chance.

Jamie 8 year old
Jamie came into rescue as a result of a divorce. Having been previously loved
and well cared for, he had a very nice disposition. While at Jim and Linda's
vet, getting ready for adoption, a woman who was there with one of her dogs was
very taken with Jamie. She followed through and adopted him, now he's living
happily with her and her husband, a cairn and a westie too!

Maggie 1 year old
Maggie (r.) and her sister just stopped getting along when they became young
adults. You know how tough 2 scottie girls can be together when they set their
mind to it. As heartbroken as their parents were, having bought the pair
together as puppies, they were worried about their safety and contacted us for
help. Maggie was placed in NYC with a woman whose scottie companion had
recently passed away. She is a sculptor, so works from a home studio, and
Maggie is getting lots of attention and walks in the park. She likes to travel
and vacation often, taking Maggie along with her. Maggie's had more vacations
this summer than we've had in years!!

Laci 2 year old
Laci, the most lovely and affectionnate scottie, was brought to us as an
emergency. Apparently, her home was very close to the neighbors and she had a
bad habit of howling when left alone. Since both parents worked fulltime, it
gave her ample reason to howl. When a neighbor came over drunk one night and
threatened the family and dogs if this continued, they got scared and were
forced to give her up. Certainly a loss to them and a gain to us. Laci was
adopted by her foster parents in northern CT. They are a young retired couple
with a lovely Victorian home near the beach and plenty of room in between the
homes. We had to get Laci out of here and into another foster home as soon as
possible, or we would never have been able to part with her. Laci enjoys
visiting their children and grandchildren and their dogs - she's very social
and loves everyone.

Molly/Maureen 8
month old Molly (pictured with Erica) found herself in a bad position when her
young family was forced to move in with their grandparents with several babies
and her. Although they were trying to find a place to rent, they were unable to
find one that would rent to young parents with children and a dog. A very mild
mannered, sweet puppy, everyone who met Molly loved her, so we enjoyed taking
her around with us. Molly was adopted by a couple in PA with another sweet
female scottie who came from Glengala. The girls sleep cuddled up together like
mother and daughter. We are looking forward to seeing Molly (now Maureen) again
at our rescue parade on October 5th.

Molly Molly Senior,
an older gal in her teens, was taken from a home in NY state by a cat rescue
group who came in to remove many cats. She was being neglected and abused and
was in terrible condition. She was fostered with Judi, vetted and groomed in
NY, and then came to join the Cerny clan in NJ for the remainder of her life.
She's a real sweet girl and enjoys meeting people and other dogs, loves her
meals and loves her walks. Unfortunately, while having her teeth cleaned, the
vet found a malignant melanoma under her tongue, so her time with us will be
shorter than we had hoped. But, she will be well loved for whatever time that
turns out to be.

Zoe Zoe is a 4.5
year old pretty brindle scottie who was too much dog for her family's toddlers
and their friends. Strong and protective, she's a scottie better suited for a
quieter environment and a more experienced household. After spending several
weeks at Chez Cook, she was adopted by a couple in PA whose scottie had
recently passed away and are friends of club members of ours. Looks like Zoe
hit the jackpot this time around!!

Phil Philadelphia
Phil, an elderly scottie/cairn mix, well into his teens we think, was brought
into the Philadelphia Paws shelter by a neighbor to be euthanized when his
owner died. The shelter wouldn't do it, he was such a sweet old guy, so we were
contacted. We brought him in, removed bladder stones to make him more
comfortable, and he hung out here in foster, just loved to totter around and
meet other dogs and lay in your lap. Phil (now Scotchee) is currently living in
New Hampshire with a woman who adopts elderly dogs, and just adores him. He has
2 elderly cairn ladies who vie to see who gets to sleep in the doggy bed with
him. We know he's safe and happy there for whatever time he has left. We were
sad to see him go.

Little Bear Little
Bear, an 8 year old male scottie, found himself in trouble when he owners died.
Their daugher and son in law had other dogs who he didn't get along with, so he
needed to be rehomed. They lived near Pittsburgh, over 8 hours from us, so we
tried to figure out a way to get him here to safety asap when no local help
could be found. They were willing to drive 4 hours, which could bring him to
the DC area, so we arranged with Jeanne Lishia from the Greater DC club to
share the care and placement of Little Bear. Such a sweet and handsome guy, he
wasn't up on our PETFINDER website but a day before we were contacted by
applicants on our waiting list from VA. By the next weekend, Little Bear with
in his new home and doing great! He goes to work every day with his new dad and
gets all the attention he'd ever need.
