Happy Endings - 2007 Q2

Jake
2 year old Jake came to us from Staten Island. His mom had to return to work fulltime after a divorce, and wanted a better life for him where someone would be around more. Very scared at first, but sweet and puppylike, we knew all it would take would be TLC and time for him to have a happy future. We placed Jake with a wonderful couple, past adopters who we kept in touch with, in Bath, PA. His new mom is a retired nurse and is home with him all day. His new dad works early and comes home early, to they have a lot of time for Jake. We know we will be keeping in touch with them and seeing great progress!

Marnie
Only 2 weeks after buying Marnie, her new mom had a stroke and was unable to walk. The family tried to help her along, but it became obvious that she would not be able to keep her. A sweet, lovely, caramel colored wheaten girl, not yet a year old, she was scared and confused when she came into rescue. We adopted Marnie out to a couple who were also past adopters, in New Hope, PA. who have a young male scottie they adopted from us a year or two ago. The two are enjoying pretty much nonstop playing, as a puppy should. Marnie likes to lounge on the couch in her new home and sleep cuddled up with her new mom. She also sits outside the shower when she's in there and right by her side when she's putting on her makeup.

Big Al
Big Al, only 6 months old. had already been in two homes by the time he was brought to a Philadelphia shelter. Worried he'd get into the wrong hands again, the shelter contacted rescue and hid him in the back until we came for him. Big Al needed some training and housebreaking, love and routine, but was an adorable little boy. He rested here for a while, put on a little weight, and started his training, before going on to his new home. He was adopted by a young couple only a few miles away who were up to the challenge and very excited about adding Big Al to their family. His new dad is a lawyer who gave us some great suggestions on how to change our adoption forms and his new mom is a teacher, home for the summer, so she'll have a lot of time to get Big Al into their routine - unless he trains them first!!

Violet
The lovely Violet (not the same Violet as was in last quarter's edition), is a 9 year old little spitfire of a scottie. Unfortunately, the couple who loved her so dearly, adopted a young child, which didn't suit Violet. When a bite scared the child badly, they contacted us to find her another home. It wasn't that easy with Cushings and some other medical issues (although she is asymptomatic now), but a very nice couple in Claymont, Delaware were interested in giving Violet a chance. She loves her new parents and they love her, but they are still working on getting her to be nicer to their Bichon. We know these things can take time and are keeping our fingers crossed. These very experienced dog owners are not the kind that give up easily!

Duffy
7 year old Duffy came to us when his owner died and her daugher wanted to euthanize him. The owner's granddaughter thankfully intervened on his behalf, retrieved him, and brought him home to NYC. She contacted us when one of her own dogs attacked him and she knew it wouldn't be safe for him there either. Duffy was one of the sweetest, most gentle scotties we've met, and our vet's personal favorite. A gentle giant. He was overweight and looked like a watermelon in a hula skirt, but with his improved diet and all the exercise he's now getting, that should be remedied soon. We placed Duffy in Bedminster, NJ with a woman and her 10 year old daughter who also have an adorable 2 year old female scottie. They are good company for each other when mom is at work. We think Duffy is just the man of the house they were looking for!

Ailsa
Ailsa came into STCGNY rescue from the Ocean County Animal Shelter in NJ last fall. She had absolutely no hair, she shook from fright, and was nursing an old leg injury. An older girl, she couldn't hear very well. After appropriate testing was done, we could still not figure out what caused this hairloss, unless it was stress or poor nutrition. She fostered with a good friend of mine in Yonkers, NY, also a past adopter, very well versed in nutrition and natural healing, and all her hair grew back in within a few months and she was no longer limping. Life must have been very hard for Ailsa on the street, she has a habit of hiding part of her meals, treats, and even her wated bowl under her blankets. She just loved the large Vari Kennel we sent with her, that it has become her favorite hideaway.

Our foster mom decided to adopt Ailsa, as she was so comfortable there and neither of us want to put her through another stressful change. She has really adapted so well and bosses around the other 2 scotties and cats at Helen's house! Ailsa will never have to wonder where her next meal or bowl of water will come from again.

Kyra/Bridget
Kyra (now Bridget), a 4 year old stray, had a very long road to her new life. Ending up in a NY state shelter, she was adopted from there and returned to us. Her brother Fiddler was featured in last quarter's Happy Endings. We boarded Kyra with the Finns at their All Star Kennels in Sewell, NJ, because we didn't have the room to take her into foster at the time. While there, we discovered that she had little bite marks all over the inside of her ears and neck, probably from other dogs. We are sure she didn't have a nice life before this. The Finns evaluated her, groomed and fed her well until we adopted her to a caring woman in Abington, PA who had recently lost her elderly scottie. Originally she thought perhaps she was too much for her, as she had some mobility problems, but with her dog experience and some coaching from us and her daughter, she was able to really turn Kyra's life around, and has decided to keep her. Kyra has blossomed into a lovely girl, now housebroken, no more stomach problems, sleeps with her new mom, and is her constant companion. She went from a scared girl, afraid to fall asleep, to one who runs around and jumps with glee. She has a toy monkey that she thinks is her puppy, who she carries around and cleans his face. We know time and the continued love she is getting will only make Kyra a happier scottie and are very thankful that her new mom put months of love into making her come this far.
