Happy Endings - 2007 Q1

Montrose
Dartagnon (now Montrose) A nice 2 year old male Scottie from southern New Jersey, he needed to be rehomed because the young couple who owned him were moving to NYC to attend business school. The housing wouldn't allow a dog. Initially frightened of new people and situations, Dartagnon still trusted rather quickly and settled faster than we expected. He is now in his forever home in NYC with an author who works from home and has lots of quality time for him. He enjoys the promenade (boardwalk) outside his front door, the small dog park, and sitting on the swing with his new mom on their gardened terrace overlooking the East River. I will always remember my last view of Dartagnon, running with his new mom up the steps to the promenade together like best friends, like the stairway to heaven.

Fiddler
Fiddler is a 4 year old male who came to us from someone who had adopted him from a NY shelter only days before. He was originally a stray, so we don't know his background. Due to the volume of rescues in foster at the time, he boarded at the Finn's All Star Kennels in Sewell, NJ, until we found his forever home. Thanks also to Marge Rosa for interviewing his new parents and doing the home inspection. His new mom is a college professor and his new dad a physical therapist in Eastern, PA. Fiddler had settled into his new life very quickly and is a happy and well loved guy. His new dad says he's just been perfect when we called for the progress report!

Scotty
7 year old Scotty2 went to his owner's daughter when she died. She contacted me when she realized she could not give him the care he needed, with her work schedule, he spent a lot of time in the garage. Very emotional over entrusting her mother's dog to someone else, we promised her he'd be in safe and loving hands. Scottie was also a sweetheart, very easy going, laid back, & friendly. He was placed with a young couple in NYC living right near both Riverside and Central Parks, so he'll have plenty of places to walk and explore. He settled right in with them and his new older scottie sister like he'd always been there. We spent a few hours in the city keeping busy and called them again to make sure things were working out before we drove back home and they were all sitting on the couch together watching a movie. We went home with happy hearts.

Shappa
Shammy (now Shappa) is a 14 month old scottie mix. Looking like an extra large scottie with red brindle hair and striking ice blue eyes, he was the kind of dog that stopped people passing him on the street to ask what he was. Seeing the kind of attention he generated, Judi had him neutered the day after picking him up from the shelter, to make sure he was never used for breeding. He was a big, stong, energetic, friendly puppy, and seems to like both the attention of people and can also amuse himself quietly with a toy. He was adopted to a couple in southern New Jersey who also have an older scottie they wanted company for. Things seem to be going very well and he's finally getting all the love, attention and exercise he thrives on. Shappa is the Indian word for Red Wolf and seems to fit him well. We know we will never see another dog with as stunning and unique a combination of traits as he has.

Jemma
A 9 year old with deformed front feet and bad allergies, Jemma came in from a PA shelter very downtrodden. Her owner couldn't fix her allergies and couldn't bear to see her suffer anymore. Jemma came down with the canine flu only a few days after coming to our home and it took the better part of two weeks and 2 antibiotics and a lot of TLC to fight it off. Another 9 weeks of food allergy trials and then allergy bloodtests isolated that she was allergic mainly to mold and dust (just like me!). We've started her on allergy shots, soothing baths and a new diet, and she's already shown a lot of improvement. Of course, after all that time, we couldn't part with her. So, she's our new daughter and fits right into our home and our hearts.

Cayenne
2 year old, wheaten scottie, Casey (now Cayenne), came in as a stray to a Long Island, NY shelter. He was so matted and overgrown, he had to be totally shaved. Suffering from pain from a badly ulcerated inner ear and scared, he was snappy at the shelter. He fostered with Judi who took excellent care of his ear and once he felt better, he really showed his true friendly and playful self. The couple who did the first leg of his transport to us, continued to think about him afterwards and then contacted me about adopting him. Being past adopters of ours, we were quite pleased, as we knew he'd have a wonderful life with them and his other scottie and schnoodle sisters. He's now settled in very well and is one happy little man. His ear finally seems to be healed, but we are keeping a close eye on it. We hope to be able to share him with everyone at the rescue parade this year at Lulu Temple.

Augie
Occasionally we pick up another breed we can place. We were contacted about Augie, an 11 month old westie, whose owners needed to give him up due to changing circumstances. We had to work fast as we heard they were going to bring him to a shelter within a few days. Thankfully the owners lived only about an hour from Judi and were willing to bring him to her. He had already had all the necessary medical care needed for adoption, so once we screened one of our applicants who had requested a scottie or a westie (they'd had both), he was ready to go to his new home. He's now living up near Rochester, NY, with his new parents who adore him already. What's not to love?

Simon
Simon is a sweet 4 year old wheaten scottie who was given to a private rescue group in NY when his mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The group preferred to have someone familiar with the breed place him, so contacted us, and we were happy to help. Simon was adopted by one of our past adopters who had recently lost an elderly wheaten scottie with Cushings they adopted from us a few years ago. With a little training, housebreaking, and fattening up, Simon is doing great. He enjoys living in and traveling between his home in suburbia and his country home with his scottie brothers.

Scotty
Scotty was left at his groomer after his original family divorced. The groomer called a client who had a scottie in and a westie and she took him home to avoid him going to a shelter, then contacted me. 6 years old, Scotty was 30 pounds of energy, but a sweetheart, very friendly and lovable. We really enjoyed fostering and snuggling him. Even the first night, he just slept right up against me like we'd been doing this for years. Scotty went to his forever home in Vermont to live with a woman who runs a business on her property. He's a great companion for her and he gets more attention than he's ever had before.

Douglas
I was contacted by a shelter in NY who had an 8 month old scottie mix come in that had been there for 3 months already with no interest. They were going to euthanize him if we couldn't take him within a week. In a panic, we went up to get him, although we didn't have foster space anywhere for him. We got him ready to adopt, he was neutered, vaccinated and groomed, but since it takes longer to adopt the mixes, we were very fortunate that a private rescue group down the street from me answered my pleas and were willing to take him in until adopted. They kept him in a foster home and took him to local offsite adoptions until someone appreciated how lovely he was. They also worked on training him and housebreaking him to make him much more adoptable. Happily, he was adopted about 6 weeks later and we were sent pictures of him in his new home. He must be a scottie/standard schnauzer mix, with a lovely scottie head on a tall body. This is a good example of there being a right match out there for almost everyone, given the time and exposure. I am so happy and relieved that this sweet and handsome young dog got a chance at life that he deserved, after all, and grateful to 11th Hour Rescue in Rockaway, NJ for all they did for him too.

Violet
Little Bit (now Violet) is a 6 year old female who came to rescue when her elderly owner died suddenly from complications of diabetes. The pastor in his town in PA saw to it that Little Bit was cared for while he was in the hospital for months, until his death, when his daughter signed her over to us. She spent time in several homes and a boarding kennel before we got her. She came in with a frayed crutiate ligament in one knee, so was in a lot of pain and unable to walk on the leg. Our vet recomended medication and rest to see if it would heal on it's own, rather than do the surgery, as it wasn't totally torn through. The surgery still might be necessary soon or in the future if it's injured again. Because we are concerned that if we adopt her out, someone might not be able or willing to afford the expensive surgery which will likely be needed, we decided to have her join our family too. She's a very sweet girl and gets along with the rest of the scotties here just fine. We think her dad would be happy she's being so well loved and the people who cared for her all those months are happy about it too. Thanks also to Marge Rosa for grooming her so beautifully when she stayed with her for the beginning of her rescue journey.
