Happy Endings - 2005 Q4

Kiltie
Kiltie is a retired non-producing brood bitch from a breeding kennel. At only 1 and 1/2 years old, she'd already been passed to 2 kennels. In only 3 weeks in foster, she went from a withdrawn, frightened, unsocialized dog to a housebroken, leash trained, affectionnate girl who loves attention. She now sleeps in bed with her new mom and dad and scottie brother in Pittsfield, Mass. and is enjoying exploring the world around her.

Professor MacTavish
Marge Rosa was contacted by someone who knew someone who needed to rehome an 18 month old scottie. The owner had died and the son was unable to keep the house. His family took him in, but that courtesy didn't extend to the family pets. They remained in the original home with the utilities turned off in December, cared for twice a day by the owner's son. The professor was not in good condition upon arrival. His neck was infected by a metal collar and he was soaked in urine, thin, hair all matted, and we feel he'd been neglected for some time. In a transport relay from Marge to the Hoylers to the Cooks, he was groomed both by Marge and Linda Cook to get him looking better. He did a lot of healing and some work on his housebreaking skills while with Jim & Linda and got lots of attention. He was soon placed with 2 men in Philadelphia's historic area, where he's very much the center of their lives.

Shammy
2 year old Shammy was picked up as a stray in Brooklyn by animal control. Not off to a good start there, he was not rated well on his temperment test. Not one to give up easily, Judi Dahl drove down from Saugerties to Brooklyn to evaluate Shammy for herself and brought him home. After a few weeks of training, Shammy soon became one of Judi's favorites. It was hard to let him go to his new home in Northport, NY. His new mom is a display designer for Macy's department store. Shammy now spends a lot of time snuggling with his new mom and his new westie brother.

Crumpet & Tweed
Crumpet & Tweed were also retired breeding sisters from the same kennel as Kiltie came from. Just under 4 years old, they were sweet but totally unsocialized with people. As they had never been apart from each other, we took the extra time to place them together with a retired couple in Lavalette, NJ with a lot of scottie experience. Crumpet is coming along really nicely, but Tweed is still experiencing adjustment fears. Time, patience and love will continue to help her along. We are continuing to advise and support them through this process.

Dalton
18 month old Dalton was picked up as a stray and brought to the Lackawanna County Shelter in Pa. Not having had much luck permanently placing terriers, they contacted us to help place him. Marge Rosa went to the shelter to groom him and make him more adoptable, as well as evaluate him. He was a typical, untrained, enthusiastic scottie pup, but must have been too much for his original owners. He was placed with a single woman in Newport, PA who works from home and has lots of time and scottie experience to work with him. She had recently lost her scottie of 14 years and was very anxious for another scottie companion. She really enjoy's Dalton's company and he goes everywhere with her

Milhouse
We had been in touch with Milhouse's family for several months before he was turned over to rescue, as they asked for advice in helping to keep him. Just under 3, he started experiencing severe skin issues and hair loss the last year. They'd brought him to 2 vets and there was no improvement. I suggested a diet change and it did help, but in the end they felt they didn't have the time or the money to give him medicated baths that he needed. When we received him, he was missing a good portion of his hair, his skin was burgundy red and hot to the touch, ears infected and skin peeling off everywhere. We took him directly to a veterinary dermatologist and she diagnosed him with seborrhea and gave us a strict protocol of medication and baths to follow. Within 3 weeks at Judi's house, Milhouse's hair was growing back in and his skin was no longer bright red or hot. Within 2 months, you could not tell that he was a special needs dog. Milhouse was moved to a new volunteer foster home where the foster parents fell in love with him and adopted him. He now only needs maintenance of a medicated bath per week, which is very manageable indeed! He's a wonderful little guy, and everyone who meets him is touched by his great personality!

Mack
Mack was also only a year old when he was turned into the Trenton shelter by his second family. He was very happy, affectionnate, and energetic and probably too much for the young children in the home. Jim & Linda retrieved him, had him to the vet and groomed him and spent time training and evaluating him. We placed him with someone who forgot to tell us that although he had no children, he babysat for his young neice daily, so we had to take him back again. He was subsequently placed with a couple in New Hope, PA who also had a female scottie. They've spent a lot of time giving Mack all the love he needs and taking him to training classes. He's adjusted perfectly to his new family and is a happy guy. We get many updates on his progress and they are very happy to have him!! Mack loves to entertain everyone who comes to visit, and looks after his new sister who has been experiencing some medical problems.
